Zion’s Leaner Reset Changes the Pelicans’ Outlook

A noticeably different arrival in New Orleans

Zion Williamson showed up at Pelicans media day with a leaner frame, a more direct tone, and a clear refusal to pretend everything has gone smoothly since he entered the league. Listed at 277 pounds, he is seven pounds lighter than a year ago and has finally broken a seven-season stretch in which the team kept him at 284 pounds. His message was simple: he is improving, but he is not finished yet.

That honesty matters because Williamson’s career has been defined as much by missed time as by flashes of dominance. The former No. 1 pick from Duke has missed 278 games, including the entire 2021-22 season, with injuries and conditioning problems responsible for most of that absence. When he is available, though, the production has still been elite, with a scoring average hovering near 24 points per game.

Why the weight drop means more than the number itself

The lower weight is only part of the story. What stands out more is the discipline behind it, especially after years in which his listed number never changed. People around the team believe this is the result of real offseason work rather than a temporary burst of effort.

Joe Dumars, who leads basketball operations, praised Williamson’s condition while still making the point that availability is what ultimately counts. He made it clear that a player cannot expect to survive an 82-game season without handling the details of conditioning and maintenance the right way.

Williamson also seemed to embrace that message. He described this stage of his preparation as more about trust and mindset than any single physical change, saying he feels more confident in the work he has put in.

New coaching, new expectations, same pressure

This season also brings a familiar challenge: a new coach. Jamahl Mosley is now Williamson’s fifth head coach in eight years, after taking over following five seasons with Orlando. His Orlando teams finished 189-221, but he steadily built the Magic from a 21-win group into a playoff team in each of his last three seasons there.

Mosley has a reputation for connecting with players and stressing defence, and he made time during the offseason to meet his new roster in person. Williamson said the coach keeps in touch regularly and treats players like people first, which has value for someone who has lived through constant turnover.

Mosley is not asking only for scoring. He wants Williamson to expand his game, make his teammates better, and become harder to predict. That includes taking more ownership of the parts of his attack that other teams have tried to invite, including his perimeter shot.

Winning first, then contract talks

Williamson is eligible for an extension this season, but there is no rush on either side. He still has two years left on his maximum-salary contract, and Dumars said the team wants to see how the year unfolds before opening negotiations. If needed, the forward will be eligible again in the 2027 offseason.

The timing makes sense for a Pelicans team that badly needs progress. New Orleans finished 26-56 last season, its second straight year below 27 wins, though the roster now looks healthier. Herb Jones, Trey Murphy III and Dejounte Murray are all back at full strength after injury-hit seasons, and Bennedict Mathurin has been added in free agency.

Williamson’s own goal is direct and ambitious at the same time. He wants to be in a Pelicans uniform when the playoffs begin in April, something that has never happened in his eight NBA seasons. If the lighter version of Williamson stays available, New Orleans could finally have a different kind of season to talk about.
