Who Could Rescue United From Their Season Spiral?

Manchester United’s managerial crisis has intensified after Bournemouth delivered a 3-0 defeat at Old Trafford on October 25. The result extended United’s winless sequence to eight matches, leaving the club 16th in the Premier League and only one point clear of the relegation places.
Michael Carrick remains in charge for now, but the growing discussion around his future has placed several prominent coaches under consideration. Antonio Conte has rejected claims that he is involved in advanced negotiations, while Eddie Howe, Unai Emery and Julian Nagelsmann are also being linked with the position.
Old Trafford Defeat Adds to Carrick’s Problems
Bournemouth controlled the match and left Manchester with a convincing victory. Rayan opened the scoring, Marcus Tavernier added a second before half-time and Evanilson completed the visitors’ success after the break.
- Final score: Manchester United 0-3 Bournemouth.
- United captain absent: Bruno Fernandes remained on the substitutes’ bench throughout.
- Recent form: United have failed to win in eight consecutive matches.
- Supporters’ response: Fans continued singing Carrick’s name while directing criticism towards the club’s board.
The loss came only four days after United were beaten 4-1 by Como in the Champions League. Fernandes had questioned Carrick’s tactical decisions after that match, but the manager said leaving him out against Bournemouth was a purely football-related choice.
That decision became one of the afternoon’s main talking points. With United struggling to create opportunities, keeping the captain on the bench made Carrick’s position appear even more vulnerable.
A Start That Has Reopened Old Fears
United’s league record explains why the pressure has become so severe. The club collected just six points from its opening six Premier League fixtures, its poorest beginning to a season since 1986. Opta also recorded seven points from seven games as the lowest total United had reached at that stage of a Premier League campaign.
Carrick’s appointment had initially been viewed as a reward for an impressive previous season. He guided United to third place, secured Champions League football and signed a permanent contract only about five months ago.
The contrast between that achievement and the current campaign is stark. United defeated Sabah 4-0 in September, a result that appeared to signal a return to form. Since then, performances have deteriorated, and confidence has drained from both the squad and the stands.
United are expected to keep Carrick in charge for the next fixture at Chelsea. That short-term decision does not necessarily represent firm backing from the hierarchy; it may simply give the club additional time to assess alternatives.
Conte Rejects Claims of Advanced Discussions
Antonio Conte attempted to cool the speculation through an Instagram statement published on October 23. The former Chelsea, Juventus, Inter and Napoli coach said he was not engaged in advanced negotiations with any club.
Conte also denied reports that he had already demanded complete control or set out financial conditions. He said those claims were unfounded and suggested that any discussion about terms would only begin if a genuine opportunity emerged.
He has been unemployed since Napoli confirmed their mutual agreement to part company on June 4. Conte won Serie A during his first season in Naples before Napoli finished second in 2025-26.
Why Conte Remains an Attractive Option
Despite his public denial, Conte’s record ensures that his name remains prominent whenever an elite club needs a new manager.
- Three Italian league titles: He is reported to be the only coach to win Serie A with Juventus, Inter and Napoli.
- Premier League success: Conte led Chelsea to the title in his first season, 2016-17.
- Rapid improvement: Chelsea and Napoli had both finished 10th before Conte took charge and soon challenged for major honours.
- Strong authority: His demanding approach could appeal to supporters seeking a decisive change at Old Trafford.
Former United midfielder Paul Scholes has publicly supported the idea. On The Good, The Bad & The Football podcast, he argued that Conte would need to arrive and immediately impose discipline across the club.
However, Conte’s managerial history also presents a concern. Juventus is the only club where he remained for more than two seasons. His other appointments ended after two seasons or less, raising questions about long-term stability.
Ashley Young, who worked with Conte at Inter, has described an intense environment. He recalled post-defeat meetings lasting three or four hours and characterized some training sessions as “a little bit boring.”
United’s Reported Shortlist
Conte is not considered the clear favourite. Reports indicate that United recruitment figure Jason Wilcox prefers Eddie Howe, who left Newcastle on July 30. Aston Villa’s Unai Emery and former Germany and Bayern Munich manager Julian Nagelsmann are also connected with the vacancy.
| Manager | Present position | Connection with United |
|---|---|---|
| Antonio Conte | Left Napoli on June 4 | Denies that advanced negotiations are taking place |
| Eddie Howe | Left Newcastle on July 30 | Reportedly favoured by Jason Wilcox |
| Unai Emery | Manager of Aston Villa | Villa would reportedly seek approximately £20 million |
| Julian Nagelsmann | Former Germany and Bayern Munich manager | Held in high regard by recruitment chief Christopher Vivell |
The upcoming trip to Chelsea could determine how quickly the search develops. Another defeat would make the question of Carrick’s replacement far more immediate, turning a rumour-driven debate into an urgent decision for United’s leadership.
